Screentime: it’s slowly crushing our children’s souls

Maddox just had her three-year checkup, and the pediatrician’s biggest concern about our feisty redhead was the amount of time she spends daily in front of a screen.

He said, I quote, “I believe that screentime is slowly crushing our childrens’ souls.”

Eek!

So I spent some time this weekend designing a way to track the kids’ screentime and also make it something that they have ownership of so that they learn to self-regulate along the way. And so far (three days in) it’s working pretty good!

Of course, there’s always something to be learned from our children. Not only is screentime crushing my kids’ souls, but it is also probably crushing mine too. How can I self-regulate the things that crush my soul and trade those for the soul-feeding stuff? I’ll be working on this throughout the course of the new year, and I’m sharing the takeaways on my social media as well. Follow along (after you listen, of course)…

  1. That was super Erica! Thanks for addressing the elephant in the room… Iā€™m gonna do the chip thing with my kids and see if it works šŸ™‚

    • Mr. Whiskers and I were JUST talking about the chips tonight… we’re a full week in, and going strong. So far the takeaway is less about how much TV our kids are watching (because it’s winter, and let’s all be real with ourselves…) – it’s that they are capable of managing THEMSELVES with it. They’re taking ownership of it. It brings me such joy I can’t even tell you…
