Making it fun is the hard part

I’ve already shared my impossible goal for 2024, and I am working VERY hard on it. And that’s the problem.

The whole idea behind an impossible goal is to stretch yourself, sure. Bu the way I wrote my impossible goal was DESIGNED TO make it so that I woudn’t burn myself out in the process.

I will make a million dollars in this business in 2024 while working while my kids are in school, 4 days a week.

What I have found is that it is actually REALLY hard to not want to just hustle and grind my way to this goal

That having REAL boundaries on my time spent on work is HARD.

I think I have to EARN this revenue target and the words ‘earn it’ equate with ‘work for it.’

But what is ‘earning it ‘ could just be doing what is required?

And, better yet, what if what was required was FUN??

I am one of the few people on the planet who ENJOY public speaking, and I’m also pretty good at it. I love being on stage, bringing energy to a crowd, giving tactical and practical insights that people can actually take home and use. Public speaking is FUN for me, and I am also paid to speak. I create VALUE when I speak. So I have fun, create value, and get paid.

II also REALLY LOVE creating content. Not just for our clients, but for my own business. I LOVE the puzzle that is mapping customer motivations to things that we have to offer. I love writing! Evoking the voice of my customers, sure, but also sharing satires and anecdotes that create clarity and action. It’s SO FUN to create content. Creating VALUABLE content is what is required for me to make a million dollars in my business this year.

I LOVE inspiring other people and helping them tap into their very best selves. It’s why we created the L.I.T. League, it’s why I do this podcast, and in all reality it’s the best reason to employ people. It is fun to understand people and their motivations and skills and it is REALLY fun to see people take their skills to another level by being given ownership of the outcomes of their role in this business.

These are just three examples of air quotes ‘hard work’ that I actually love, that I can have a lot of fun doing.

The hard work is actually focusing on the fun part, and approaching the ‘work’ I do from a place of joy instead of hustle and grind. Same activity, different mindset, wildly different result.

So my challenge I’m taking on this week is just that: making it fun.

When I plan my week on Sunday, as I put things on my calendar I’m going to ask the question:

HOW CAN I MAKE THIS FUN?

And you’d better believe I’ll report back to you on the outcomes. While we’re at it, will you join me on the adventure?

If you accepted last week’s challenge then you may be looking at a list of Obstacle To Dos. Now that you’ve committed to tackling those, layer on the ‘how can I make this fun?’ Question.

As an example, one of my obstacle to dos is the challenge of the uncontrollable circumstance that is my kids possibly getting sick. My backup babysitter list and ‘asking for help from the rest of the gang’ action plan could be a TOTAL SLOG. Contacting a bunch of people to be on call for babysitting could be a grueling chore, or a great excuse to meet some new people and reconnect with our kids’ favorite caretakers. Getting my other kids and husband involved in the sickness rodeo could be like pulling teeth, or we could agree together that when somebody drops and mama still has to work, we have a pajama + popcorn living room party to keep the healthy kids quarantined while Mama knocks out two important tasks and then a dance party to celebrate when she’s done.

This makes the ‘hard work’ fun, AND it actually enrolls others in the achievement of the impossible, which makes it that much sweeter.

Have a ton of hard work on your list this week? Ask how you can make it fun. Have a mountain of obstacle to-dos to conquer? How can you make it fun?

I’ll be asking this question throughout the week as I take massive action towards the impossible and I will report back to you on what I learned in the process.

Until next week, work hard, mom harder, make it fun, and together we’re going to change the world.
